Gratitude

The Talmud relates that a person who travels through the desert says a special blessing expressing gratitude to HaShem. The desert is eerily beautiful, yet venturing through the desert is taking a plunge into a world of unfamiliar emptiness. Today it is less common to have to make a journey through the desert. However, we are all prone to encounter these experiences of emptiness at certain times in our lives. This teaching from the Talmud is perhaps encouraging us that from within these moments that we feel lacking, we have the opportunity to emerge stronger. If we address this lacking and make a change, we can develop our sense of gratitude by reflecting back to the feeling of emptiness and experiencing the fullness of our current being.
